Assignment Sheet, Annotated BibliographyGeneral DescriptionThe Proposal assignment requires that you carefully research your topic to provide support for your ideas and to demonstrate your ethics. To certify that we are meeting this criterion, each student will produce an annotated bibliography. An annotated bibliography is a list of sources that you have carefully examined, some of which you will use in your actual paper. The term “research paper” implies that you have done your research before you have arrived at the argument and conclusions you present—in other words, that you have read through “all” of the available literature on your project. Of course, you cannot possibly read all the literature; however, you need to present an adequate range of citations to show that you understand what kinds of materials are available.Research RequirementsYour annotated bibliography should, at minimum, list the following sources:• 2 books• 2 popular magazine articles• 2 scholarly journal articles• 2 articles from different, geographically-separated newspapers• 2 electronic sources (websites, emails)Online versions of books, popular magazines, journals, and newspapers are acceptable if they represent legitimate sources that have been edited, fact-checked, and peer-reviewed, and, in the case of books, published by a recognizable, reputable house (not self-published). In other words, an article from nytimes.com is a newspaper article, not a general electronic source, because it is being published by the New York Times, a highly recognized and reputable (though not infallible) paper. The same would be true for sites like ew.com (the official website of Entertainment Weekly, a well-regarded popular magazine) or a scholarly journal article that you found in full text through the College’s databases. You may also use other kinds of sources in your bibliography—additional numbers of the source types listed above, or videos, personal interviews, films, etc. However, using such sources does not free you from your obligation to find and annotate the types and numbers of sources listed above.ContentTo complete the annotated bibliography, you must perform the following tasks:1) locate at minimum the types and number of sources listed above;2) cite them all correctly in MLA format (and don’t forget that “MLA format” includes how you format your page—i.e., alphabetization, hanging indents, spacing between lines, font size and style, etc.);3) discuss, in brackets, what kind of source it is, what its main ideas are, and how/whether it will be useful to your project.**The sources that you use in your paper MUST come from the annotated bibliography, so choose wisely.**A sample entry:Addicted to Plastic: The Rise and Demise of a Modern Miracle. Directed by Ian Connacher, Bullfrog Films, 2008.[This documentary film examines plastic and its negative effect on various ecosystems. Marine life specifically suffers from plastic pollution. In fact, the ratio of plastic material to marine organisms in the ocean is currently ten to one. This debris is later ingested by marine animals, who will choke or die as a result. Despite the generality of the film, I will use some of the presented information. First, I will tie in the various statistics about plastic; such as the low percentages of plastic being recycled worldwide, before concentrating my argument on Styrofoam. This will convey a serious tone for the paper and will emphasize the magnitude of the problem. Next, I will elaborate on landfills and the impact that plastics have on landfills—they do not compress or degrade. This section of the paper will help my readers to realize that we need to lessen our dependency on landfills. Finally, I will discuss the methods of recycling that were shown in the film to persuade my audience that Styrofoam, a plastic itself, can be successfully recycled.]Format and LengthYour annotated bibliography should be no less than 1,000 words long, including annotations, but given the number of sources you need to find and the kind of annotations I am looking for (thorough and descriptive), it will probably be longer.
