Use Moschella’s “Guide to a Research Plan” on p. 84 of Ethnography as a Pastoral Practice to help you develop your own research plan. Write a substantive paragraph for questions 1 through 4 (600-800 words); if you are proposing an interview or survey, include a set of questions you intend to ask as well as reasons for selecting the group of people you plan to interview, survey, or observe. You might develop a short survey, gather a focus group, assume the role of a participant observer in a number of worship services or other events, interview some leaders or lay leaders in your church, or combine several of these approaches to better help you answer your question. Consider carefully how you will accomplish these methods in a few weeks’ time during the semester and how the method/s you choose will help you to answer the question/s you have formulated. If you find your questions are still too broad, nuance them so that you can research them in the allotted time and through the methods you have available to you. You should not seek comprehensive answers to your questions but gather enough information to help you formulate and analyze an initial hypothesis about how to answer the question in your particular context.
