According to Te American HeritageDictionary of the English Language, 4th Ed, (2000), the word synopsis is defned as “Abrief outline . . . a summary.”5. Identify three themes that relate to the purpose of the memo (how differentcommunications technologies are impacting on the way we communicate at work) to formthe structure for the body of your work. Examples of themes could be: mobile work-fromhome; unifed communications; and closer collaborations) Support for each theme mustcome from at least TWO of your THREE sources. Use one quotation in each section fromone of your three sources.6. Each theme requires a heading which should be clearly, logically and accurately labelledsince headings reveal the organisation of the paper and permit quick reference to specifcinformation. Tey also make the paper easy to read.7. Write the two-page Executive Summary in a plain serif (e.g. Times New Roman) or sans(e.g. Arial) font. A serif font is easier to read. Suggested sizes are 12 for the text and 14 forthe headings. Double or 1.5 space. Put page numbers in line with the right margin at thebottom of each page. Te Reference List must be on the third (seperate) page.8. You will need to use SCU Harvard style to document your sources within the text and inthe Reference List. Avirtual team is made up of geographically or organisationally dispersed members who arelinked primarily through advanced information and telecommunications technologies.Your Sydney HQ is developing a new marketing team with team members located in Sydney,New York, Beijing and Mumbai. Tis will necessitate the establishment of a virtual team spreadover four different time zones using both synchronous (real time) and asynchronous (notconcurrent) communication. One of the primary advantages of virtual teams is the ability to assemble the most talentedgroup of people to complete a complex project through creativity and innovation. On apractical level the virtial team can also save employees’ time and cut travel expenses. However, virtual teams also present unique challenges.A number of the team have expressed concerns about how it will all work, and whethermeetings might be scheduled when one part of the team is about to go to lunch, while theother part is asleep. Other concerns include: language difculties, time-and-distancechallenges, the absence of face-to-face contact, as well as the barriers posed by culturaldifferences such as work-pacing, communication styles, decision-making, and the perceptionof deadlines. To help ‘sell’ the idea and persuade the team members of the advantages of the virtual teamyour boss, the Marketing Director, is planning a virtual meeting with all team members. She isaware of the concerns and knows that the issues raised by the staff have the potential toprovide rich soil for misunderstandings and conflict. To that end she understands howimportant this presentation will be in creating a favourable association with virtual teams, aswell as a good opportunity to start to build engagement, trust and candour among the teammembers. To prepare for the virtual meeting she has asked you to prepare two documents:(i) a short report identifying some of the critical areas that need to be addressed when leadingand managing virtual teams; and(ii) a PowerPoint slide presentation comprising no more than fve slides highlighting threepractices for establishing effective virtual teams and solutions for achieving such practices(recommendations or how it’s done). Please note:Persuasion aims to influence other people’s behaviours and attitudes. Successful persuasionshows readers ‘what’s in it for them’. Persuasive writing, or the argument, is one of the maintypes of both corporate writing and academic writing. At work, some of the persuasivedocuments you might have to write are proposals, offers to clients, and memos suggestingalternative methods or new ways of doing particular tasks.Persuasive writing has all the features of analytical writing (that is, information plus reorganising the information), with the addition of your own point of view. Most essays atuniversity are persuasive, and there is a persuasive element in at least the discussion andconclusion of a research article.10 | MNG81001 Management Communication (Session 1, 2018)Points of view in academic writing can include an argument, a recommendation, interpretation of fndings or an evaluation of the work of others. In persuasive writing, eachclaim you make needs to be supported by some evidence, for example a reference to researchfndings or published sources.Te kinds of instructions for a persuasive assignment include: argue, evaluate, discuss, take aposition. To be effective, persuasive writing must contain a balanced assessment, strong evidence, andpersuasive language using different types of rhetorical appeals or persuasive strategies. Please follow these guidelines to complete the assessment:1. To help reach your own point of view on the facts or ideas:◦ read some other points of view on the topic. Who do you feel is the most convincing?◦ look for patterns in the data or references. Where is the evidence strongest?◦ list several different interpretations. What are the real-life implications of each one?Which ones are likely to be most useful or benefcial? Which ones have someproblems?◦ discuss the facts and ideas with someone else. Do you agree with their point of view?2. To develop your argument:◦ list the different reasons for your point of view.◦ think about the different types and sources of evidence which you can use to supportyour point of view.◦ consider different ways that your point of view is similar to, and different from, thepoints of view of other researchers.◦ look for various ways to break your point of view into parts.3. To present your argument, make sure:◦ your text develops a coherent argument where all the individual claims work togetherto support your overall point of view.◦ your reasoning for each claim is clear to the reader.◦ your assumptions are valid.◦ you have evidence for every claim you make.◦ you use evidence that is convincing and directly relevant.4. Use three to fve secondary sources.5. Submit Assessment 2 to via the Blackboard site no later that the due date: Monday 9thApril 2018 9.00am (QLD time).6. Refer to the Marking Criteria Guide and Marking Rubric located under Assessment Tasksand Submissions.PRIOS/CDT brief (covered in lecture and tutorials) for Assessment 2:a. Purpose: Te purpose of this document is to persuade team members of the benefts andadvantages of working as a virtual team.b. Readers: Your boss (the Marketing Director of XYZ Company).c. Information: Based on secondary sources.d. Organisation: Direct order approach (start with you most signifcant criterion, etc.)e. Style: Formal. Focus on being clear and concise, not flowery or overly-descriptive. Be sureto proofread carefully to ensure that there are no sentence-level errors such as spellingmistakes, wrong word choice, incorrect punctuation, etc.f. AssessmentGroup/individualLearningoutcomesGradingindicatorMinScoreWeightLength/durationDueProfessionalaccreditation Case study Individual 1, 2, 4 Graded N/A 25% 1000words04 May2018 9:00AMN/ATe objective of Assessment 3 is to understand the concept of ‘analysis’ and learn how toanalyse information efciently and effectively using a case study.According to Rosenwaser and Stephen (2009, p. 4), analysis is:More than just a set of skills, analysis is a frame of mind, an attitude toward experience. It is a form of detective work that typically pursues something puzzling, something youare seeking to understand rather than something you are already sure you have theanswers to.Analysis fnds questions where there seemed not to be any, and it makes connections thatmight not have been evident at frst.A business case study ‘is a description of an actual situation, commonly involving a decision, achallenge, an opportunity, a problem or an issue faced by a person (or persons) in anorganization’ (Erskine, J.A. and Leenders, M.R., Learning with Cases, © 1997, Richard IveySchool of Business).Cases contain relevant data about the issue available to the key person in the case, plusbackground information about the organisation.Assessment Task 3 (weighting = 25%)Te Qantas social media disasterCompanies around the globe are embracing and adopting social media for many differentreasons, including: customer service, marketing, internal communications, public relations, and corporate social responsibility. It is now a reality that social media is changing the waystakeholders and companies communicate daily, providing opportunities for collaboration, participation, interactivity, and engagement.Your task is to analyse a business case study that chronicles one of the worst years for Qantas. In 2011 Qantas faced a communication strategy that spiraled out of control. According toAustralia’s public relations watchdog, PRdisasters.com, Qantas not only fnished 2011 with thebiggest PR disaster but three of its slip-ups made the top 10 list for 2011. Te top 10 list of PRdisasters in Australia for 2011 can be obtained at the following website:https://prdisasters.com/2012/01/09/australias-2011-pr-disasters-awards-announced/Tis case places you directly into the role of Olivia Wirth, executive of Government andCorporate affairs at Qantas Airlines, who must devise a plan of action to respond to thecompany’s failed and publicly scrutinised social media contest through Twitter. You need to12 | MNG81001 Management Communication (Session 1, 2018)apply analytical, decision-making, creativity and communication skills to create an effectivestrategy for Qantas management to implement. You also need to take into consideration theseries of events that have compounded over the past years to negatively affect the public’sperception of Qantas. In response to the company’s failed Twitter contest and mounting public animosity, whatcourse of action should Olivia Wirth recommend to Qantas management? Please follow these guidelines to complete the assessment:Tere are four steps that you need to complete for this assignment:1. Carefully read the Ivey Business School case: ‘Qantas Airlines: Twitter Nosedive’.Note: you will need to go onto the Ivey Business School websitehttps://www.iveycases.com/ and purchase a copy of this case (approximately $5.00 Aud).2. Read the case several times and answer the following questions in your analysis/recommendation(s):a. What future actions can Qantas take to build a positive public perception of the brand?Be prepared to provide justifcation for your recommended actions.b. Identify three important factors for an organisation to consider when using socialmedia, such as Twitter, for contest or other public relations initiatives. Use 3-5secondary sources to support your analysis.c. Using the Communication Plan Template in the case (see Exhibit TN-1), devise acourse of action for Olivia Wirth to recommend to Qantas management. Someimportant guidelines to consider when developing a recommended course of action:• Te different stages of the communication plan template must ft together, if theydo not, adjustments must be made.• Te communication plan should be realistic and feasible.• Te various problems that Qantas has experienced publically over the past yearmust be taken into account.3. Write a frst draf of this memo at least one week prior to the due date to ensure adequatetime for revision. Please be aware that the writing quality and appropriate referencing willbe marked as well as the content.4. Yet it seems that ‘communication problems’ arecontinually mentioned as one of the main difculties for most organisations.Your boss, the CEO of ABC Company, has asked you to investigate the question: ‘whymanagers should make effective communication a priority’? In so doing she expects you toexamine four issues:1. the interpersonal aspects of communication – communicating to persuade and influencingothers (key points for practicing the art of persuasion);2. the organisation as a whole and formal communication channels – establishing andmaintaining formal and informal channels of communication downward, upward andhorizontally;3. personal communication channels – including personal networks, the grapevine andwritten communication; and fnally4. aspects of communication that relate to sustainability: communication of sustainabilityactivities and achievements (the corporate social responsibility report), and thesustainability of an organisation’s communications activities themselves.Working in groups of four, each student will write on one of these four workplacecommunication issues. Please follow these guidelines to complete the assessment:1. Tis assessment comprises two parts:a. group-assigned written report, andb. three-minute individual oral presentation.2. In Week 6 you will be assigned to a group of four students. Internal students will be giventheir group in the tutorial; external students will be notifed via email. Each group isexpected to produce a team contract:◦ establishing team procedures◦ identifying expectations◦ specifying the consequences for failing to follow these procedures and fulfll theseexpectations.Since the basic purpose of this team contract is to accelerate your team’s development,to increase individual accountability for team tasks, and to reduce the possibility forteam conflict, make your contract as specifc as possible: (a) specify each task asdetailed as possible, (b) specify each step in a procedure or process as detailed as14 | MNG81001 Management Communication (Session 1, 2018)possible, (c) specify the exact person(s) responsible for each specifc task, and (d)specify the exact time and exact place for completion or submission of each task.Complete, sign, and submit a copy of your fnalised contract to your tutor in Week 7.3. Each student in your group needs to select ONE of the four workplace communicationissues. Please note: there is an individual mark for your particular section and a groupmark for the overall report.4. Start your web-based research with a search of popular business publications, even tradejournals, professional journals and current affairs journals, for any information aboutworkplace communication issues. Finally, use academic research to support your fndingsin relation to your selected theme.5. Each student needs to fnd 8-10 secondary sources for his/her section. Please note you areexpected to use a minimum of four (4) refereed academic journals. You will be shown howto tell if a journal is peer reviewed/refereed. Do not include more than 10 references perstudent.6. Document your report using SCU Harvard format.7. You are encouraged to write a frst draf of this report at least one week prior to the duedate to ensure adequate time for revision. Please be aware that the writing quality andappropriate referencing will be marked as well as the content.8. Submit the report Turnitin via the Blackboard site no later than the due date: Friday 1stJune 2018, 9.00am (QLD time). Please note: only one student submits on behalf of theirgroup.9.
