Organisations and Behaviour Assignment Context You are required to base your answers to these assignment tasks on an organisation of your choice. This could be your current employer, a previous employer or an organisation that you have researched via the internet or text books. Imagine that you have recently graduated from university and whilst you have not been appointed as a manager yet it is widely thought that you have the potential to become a senior manager at the organisation in the future. A recent employee survey conducted by the senior management team at the organisation has revealed that many employees are unhappy with the way they are being managed and feel that the organisation is not currently managing its employees in the best way possible. The current senior management team is keen to get a grass roots view of the organisation and how it is being managed and have asked you to prepare a report on the organisation’s structure, culture, management and motivational techniques and team working approaches. Assignment Task Consider the Assignment Context on page 3. Produce a formal report to the senior management team to include the following: Introduction (suggested word count 300 words) Section 1 Organisation Structure and Culture (suggested word count 800 words) Compare and contrast the organisational structure and culture that exists within your chosen organisation to that of another organisation of your choice. In your comparison analysis you should explain how the chosen organisation structures and cultures impact on the businesses performance (Assessment Criteria 1.1, 1.2) Discuss two factors that influence individual behaviour at work e.g. personality and intelligence. (Assessment Criterion 1.3) Section 2 Leadership and Management (suggested word count 600 words) Consider the two organisations you identified in Section 1, and evaluate the management approach/es e.g. scientific, contingency used by those organisations. Using examples, explain how these management ‘theories’ influence the line managers day to day activities and practices. (Assessment Criteria 2.2, 2.3) Section 3 Motivation (suggested word count 1000 words) Compare how Maslow’s ‘Hierarchy of Needs’ theory and one other motivation theory are, or could be, applied within your chosen organisation. Evaluate the usefulness of the theories by describing in detail how they are / could be implemented in practice. (Assessment Criteria 3.2, 3.3) Identify two different types of leadership style and compare how effective they are / would be in managing the employees in the organisation. Discuss the impact of each of the leadership styles on employee motivation during a specific time of change. (Assessment Criteria 2.1, 3.1) Section 4 Groups and Teams (suggested word count 800 words) Discuss and evaluate how the organisations use of technology promotes or inhibits the development of effective teamwork / team functioning, ensuring that you also incorporate an explanation of the nature of groups and group behaviour in organisations into your answer. (Assessment Criteria 4.1, 4.2, 4.3) Student Guidelines 1. You should write this assignment in a FORMAL REPORT layout and you should ensure that you produce a coherently written document that responds to each of the assignment tasks in turn. 2. You must ensure that the submitted assignment is all your own work and that all sources used are correctly attributed. Penalties apply to assignments which show evidence of academic unfair practice; see the Student Handbook which is in the Induction Module.  Please also refer to the Guide to Unfair Practice in Assessment on the module page on i-learn. 3. You MUST underpin your analysis and evaluation of the key issues with appropriate and wide ranging academic research and ensure this is referenced using the Bournemouth University (BU) Harvard system. The ‘My Study Skills’ area contains the following useful resources; Study Skills Guide (containing a BU Harvard Referencing section) and a BU Harvard Referencing Interactive Tutorial. You must use the BU Harvard Referencing method in your assignment. 4. You should use diagrams and tables of figures where appropriate ensuring to reference their source using the BU Harvard Referencing method. 5. You are required to write your assignment within 3500 words in order for your research and summarising skills to be developed, and for effective time management. You are required to ensure that the assignment addresses all of the assessment tasks. In the interests of good academic practice, an assignment submitted with excessive word counts (i.e. more than 10% in excess of the limit) will be returned to you. You will be given a maximum of 48 hours to edit the work to reduce the word count to the permitted maximum. In the event that the submission is still regarded as excessively long then, in line with advice received from Pearson, we will be unable to accept it for marking and you will receive a Refer grade for Non-Submission. The word count excludes the title page, executive summary, reference list and appendices.  Where assessment questions have been reprinted from the assessment brief these will also be excluded from the word count.  All other printed words are included in the word count, including those contained within charts and tables. 6.
