SWB211: Social Work Case Study- Literature Review Assignment Case Study: Russell aged 71, is an Aboriginal man who has been living on the island where he originally grew up for the last three years. He has been staying with his younger son James, James’ girlfriend Sarah and their two year old daughter Crystal. Russell grew up on the local mission 1 on the island. Unlike other missions of the time, parents were able to live with their children on the island rather than having children placed in dormitories. Russell lived much of his early life with his mother Margaret and Aunty Joan in modest accommodation. Russell’s Dad John worked in the local ‘Aboriginal gang’ at the Benevolent Asylum for some time, but then enlisted as a soldier in World War II, when Russell was only a baby. He later returned to the island when Russell was five years old. Russell’s family, like many Aboriginal families on the island had a mixed cultural heritage, with intermarriage occurring between people who came to live and work on the island. Russell’s mother Margaret had Aboriginal and Cornish ancestors and Russell’s father John had ties to both Aboriginal and Fijian cultures. Russell, considered a “half-caste” 2 at the time, attended the local school for “lighter skinned” children rather than the mission school and received a basic education until he was 14 years old. Despite the diversity of people who lived on the island, it was a tight-knit 3 culture and Elders 4 lived close by for support and guidance. Russell’s relationship with his father was not a particularly close one. Russell had attributed this to John’s absence in his early childhood. The one area in which father and son did connect was their love of boxing, playing cards and betting on the horse races. Russell showed a talent for fighting at a young age and when he left the island as a young man became quite successful in the boxing ring, winning many a competition throughout Australia as a middle-weight boxing champion. In between fighting competitions, Russell would do a lot of labouring work 5.
